What is it?

Reiki (prounounced) Ray Key) is a combination of two Japanese words, rei and ki meaning universal life energy. It is a natural healing system designed to assist in healing and helping to achieve balance. It is administered by a practitioner serving as a conduit to transfer Universal Life Force enegery (ki), by hands-on or distance healing techniques to heal, balance subtle energies in our body (physical, emotional, mental and spiritual). Reiki is not a religion, it is a spiritual art which embracing a life of balance and promotes spiritual growth. It is received at different rates, depending upon various factors such as the extent of a recipients illness, degree of blockage, readiness to change and so forth. It does not infringe upon personal beliefs or values.
Reiki was developed by Dr. Mikao Usui, a Japanese Zen Buddhist, businessman, spiritualist and scholar in 1922 while performing a 21 day meditation and fast on Mount Kurama in Japan. It was here that through his meditations he gained knowledge and the spiritual power to apply and attune others to what he called Reiki. Usui taught over 2000 people until his death in 1928. He left with 16 continuing as masters to teach his work. In the 1930's Hawayo Takata, a Hawaiian native of Japanese descent was introduced to Reiki and became initiated as a master in 1938. Takata established clinics through Hawaii, and onto the United States, but it wasn't until 1970 that she began initiating masters. Takata died in 1980 by which time she had trained 22 Reiki masters. Almost all Reiki taught outside of Japan can be attributed to her work.
During a session, Reiki practitioners will rest their hands on specific body areas for 2 to 5 minutes. At this time, they are drawing qi from the universe, through their chakra's, and transferring it to their client through their hands. Reiki does not involve massage or manipulating bones or tissues, however can be incorporated into other treatments. At Absolute Body Harmony we use the Usui System of Reiki.

Your Reiki Journey

Preparing for the appointment
Consultation
- Select your appointment time when you are going to be most relaxed and will be able to truly let go during the session.
- Select clothing that is comfortable and unrestrictive, and only wear minimal jewellery.
- Minimise stimulates and increase water intake slightly to increase qi flow through the body.
Consultation
- We start your session with a brief consultation. This is to discuss your reason for seeking a treatment, review your medical history and select the best approach for you during your session.
- Your comfort is very important to us. The lighting and temperature our treatment rooms are adjusted to help you feel more comfortable and relaxed. You can also have the option of relaxing music being played during your session from our selection, or you may bring a favourite CD of yours from home.
Treatment
- You will be asked to lay down on our comfortable massage table or remain seated in a chair. You will remain fully clothed and be asked to remove your shoes and loosen anything restrictive, such as a belt, so that you can relax. It is also best if you remove any jewellery as it may alter qi flow. We may also cover you with a towel, sheet or blanket for extra comfort.
- We will then undertake the session, which involves resting our hands on (or slightly above) on series of body placements for periods of 2 to 5 minutes.
- You may also be asked to roll over or shift into a different position during the session so we can access different areas of the body.
- Body areas worked on may include: head, forehead, throat, shoulders, palms, back, heart, belly, lower abdomen, sacrum, hips, knees, and or feet. These areas will provide healing to: chakra's, organs, joints, lymphatic zones and the auric field. If there are any area's that you would like us to focus on... or not work on, that is absolutely fine and we can discuss this with you.
- Sensations may include: tingling, vibrational buzzing, numbness, warmth, coolness, heightened awareness, euphoria, calm, peaceful, or simply relaxed. For some clients they may not feel any physical sessions, and this is perfectly fine. Some are so relaxed they will even fall asleep, feel like they are floating outside of their bodies, or even have meaningful visualisations!
- As we move hand positions, some clients with heightened awareness of their body feel the previous hand position is still being worked on. This phenomenon is called 'phantom hands' and is simply Reiki energy continuing to flow into that area.
- When the treatment is finished, you will be offered some water while we take a moment to discuss how you felt, what we felt during, and what you may need to consider moving forward.
- Most clients feel at the end of the treatment more refreshed, with a more positive and balanced outlook.
- Allow yourself to be guided to what you need to do. If you need to rest, do so. If you need to be active, do so.
- Increase water intake and eat light healthy meals. As your vibration increases, toxins stored in the body are released into the blood stream to be filtered by the liver and kidneys. Increasing water, even slightly, can help flush these toxins out of the body.
- Refrain from discussing your session for 24-48 hours. After you leave, your Reiki healing will continue, particularly during the first 48 hours. So it is important to be able to reflect within, without interference (no matter how well intended it may be) from others.
- Depending upon the reason you are seeking treatment for will depend upon how many sessions you require.
What is it good for?
- Relaxation
- Stress reduction
- Depression
- Pain relief and recovery from injury
- Reduction of inflammation
- Increasing circulation and lymphatic flow
Reiki is excellent for stress reduction and increasing positive energy flow in the body. This alone is great for emotional issues such as depression and anxiety, which in turn can help reduce more physical conditions such as headaches, colds, and sore muscles. It has also been known to help recovery and increase healing from chemotherapy, surgery, and trauma. Babies love Reiki and it is great for pre and post labour balancing.
Reiki works really well with regular medical or psychological treatment, and is not contraindicated with medications.
